Overview

God of War Laufey is the next mainline entry in the God of War franchise, officially revealed at PlayStation's State of Play on June 2, 2026. Developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, the game shifts the spotlight from Kratos and Atreus to Laufey — known as Faye — the legendary warrior and wife whose death opens the 2018 God of War.

Unlike a spin-off or side story, Sony and Santa Monica Studio have confirmed Laufey as a full mainline chapter. The game combines the intimate storytelling and world-building of the Norse era with combat DNA drawn from the classic Greek trilogy — faster, more aerial, and built around Faye's unique agility and soul-manipulation powers.

Set in the Everywhen, a transcendent afterlife where gods from across mythologies collide, God of War Laufey explores what happens when a god dies — a question Odin himself pursued obsessively during Ragnarök. Players will experience semi-open exploration, cinematic single-shot presentation, and the brutal, precise combat the series is known for.

Release Date & Platforms

God of War Laufey does not yet have an official release date. The PlayStation Store lists the game as "Coming Soon" with a release date marked "To Be Determined." Santa Monica Studio has stated the game is in active development and showcased substantial gameplay footage at the June 2026 reveal, suggesting meaningful progress toward launch.

Based on franchise patterns — God of War (2018) to Ragnarök spanned roughly four years — industry speculation points toward a 2027 release window, though this remains unconfirmed. Pre-orders and pricing have not been announced. Based on recent Sony first-party pricing, the Standard Edition may launch around $69.99 USD, but this is unofficial speculation.

Story & Timeline

God of War Laufey begins at the same moment as the 2018 God of War — Kratos and Atreus burning Faye's body on a funeral pyre. While the father and son embark on their journey through the Nine Realms, Faye's story diverges: she awakens in a strange land after her death, discovering that the protective plans she set in motion for Kratos and Atreus are now at risk.

Captured by two masked figures shortly after awakening, Faye must fight through the Everywhen — the afterlife of the gods — to save the people she loves. The narrative explores Faye's humanity, strengths, and flaws, revealing the warrior behind the legacy that shaped an entire saga.

The story connects directly to Odin's obsession in God of War Ragnarök, where the All-Father sought knowledge of what lies beyond mortal and divine afterlives. Laufey delivers the answer: gods who die enter the Everywhen, a realm where magic originates and returns, and where power-hungry deities from every mythology vie for dominance.

God of War (2018)

Faye dies. Kratos and Atreus begin their journey. Faye's protective plans are set in motion.

Laufey Opening

The funeral pyre scene plays out — then Faye awakens elsewhere, confused and imprisoned.

Everywhen

Faye escapes with Rue's sword, meets Phranque, and enters a conflict between cross-mythology gods.

Ragnarök Connection

While Kratos and Atreus face Ragnarök, Faye's journey in the Everywhen runs parallel — protecting the same family from a different realm.

The Everywhen

The Everywhen is the central setting of God of War Laufey — described by Santa Monica Studio as the birthplace and endpoint to which all magic returns. It is a transcendent realm above the Nine Realms and all other worlds players have visited, where gods, creatures, and mythologies from across existence converge.

Magic flows into the Everywhen and back out into all worlds, making it both the source and final destination of supernatural power. When gods die, they arrive here — but the natural flow of magic has been disrupted, turning what might be paradise into a prison Faye must navigate to find her way home.

Unlike the Norse Nine Realms, the Everywhen is cross-cultural by design. Faye encounters deities from Egyptian, Mongolian, and other mythologies, reflecting Santa Monica Studio's ambition to expand the God of War universe beyond Greek and Norse pantheons.

Everywhen

The afterlife of the gods — where all magic originates and returns. A realm beyond any single mythology.

Magic Disruption

The natural flow of magic in the Everywhen has been disturbed, trapping beings and escalating conflicts between gods.

Cross-Mythology

Gods from Norse, Egyptian, Mongolian, and other pantheons coexist and compete for power in the Everywhen.

Characters

God of War Laufey brings Faye to the forefront while connecting to the broader Norse saga through Kratos, Atreus, and the consequences of Faye's long-term plans.

Faye (Laufey)

Protagonist

Warrior, wife of Kratos, and mother of Atreus. As the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, she was among the most powerful protectors of the Giants. After her death, she awakens in the Everywhen and must fight to protect her family. Voiced by Deborah Ann Woll.

Kratos

Supporting (Norse Saga)

The Ghost of Sparta begins his journey with Atreus at Faye's funeral pyre. While not the playable protagonist, his story runs parallel to Faye's as both fight to protect their family.

Atreus

Supporting (Norse Saga)

Son of Kratos and Faye, whose destiny is central to the plans Faye set in motion before her death. His path in the Nine Realms intersects with Faye's struggle in the Everywhen.

Rue

Companion

An enchanted ribbon guardian tasked with protecting a devastatingly powerful sword. Rue grants Faye access to the blade after earning her trust. Voiced by Perlina Lau.

Phranque

Companion

A curious cosmic cube with an earnest disposition who joins Faye's journey. Phranque will do whatever it takes to protect friends and the creatures of the Everywhen. Voiced by Jack Quaid.

Combat & Gameplay

Santa Monica Studio designed Faye's combat to feel fresh yet familiar — combining the movement and fluidity of the Greek-era games with the Norse era's intimate, over-the-shoulder presentation and character-driven storytelling. The result is noticeably faster and more aerial than Kratos' combat style.

Faye moves seamlessly between ground and air attacks without halting the action. Her increased mobility adds offensive and defensive tools — dodging, repositioning, and launching extended aerial combos — that create a hyper-responsive combat feel. The single-camera-shot presentation from 2018 and Ragnarök returns, maintaining cinematic continuity.

Director Ariel Lawrence and Head of Creative Cory Barlog have emphasized that Laufey meets the high combat expectations of the series while offering something genuinely new through Faye's speed, soul manipulation, and sword-based fighting style.

Ground-to-Air Flow

Faye transitions between ground and aerial attacks without breaking combo momentum, enabling relentless offensive pressure.

Greek-Era DNA

Combat pace echoes the Blades of Chaos era — fast, combo-heavy, and acrobatic — layered onto the modern over-the-shoulder camera.

Parry & Reposition

Golden aura parries and agile dodges let Faye control battlefield spacing against even the fiercest gods.

Semi-Open Exploration

Like its predecessors, Laufey features explorable environments within the Everywhen, balancing combat arenas with discovery.

Weapons & Abilities

As the former owner of the Leviathan Axe, Faye is no stranger to legendary weapons. In the Everywhen, she earns the trust of Rue and gains access to a devastatingly powerful sword — speed, control, and relentlessness define its combat tempo.

Faye's signature ability is the Golden Hand of the Jötnar — the title she held as the most powerful protector of the Giants. In the Everywhen, where magic is at its strongest, her soul-related powers are greatly amplified.

Legendary Sword

Guarded by Rue, this blade unleashes its full potential in Faye's expert hands. Built for speed and momentum — chaining ground strikes into aerial finishers with decisive, deadly precision.

Golden Hand of the Jötnar

Faye strikes with her golden palm to detach a foe's soul from their body. She can then attack the soul directly, knock it into other enemies, and create combo chains — opening creative combat possibilities.

Soul Manipulation

Exposed souls become weapons. Launch them into enemy groups, attack them for bonus damage, and extend combos — a system Santa Monica Studio encourages players to master through experimentation.

Companions & Party

Faye does not journey through the Everywhen alone. Shortly after awakening, she meets Phranque and Rue — two companions who serve distinct narrative and gameplay roles in her adventure.

Phranque provides warmth and loyalty as a cosmic cube who protects the creatures of the Everywhen, while Rue's connection to the legendary sword ties directly into Faye's combat progression. Together, the trio ventures deep into the Everywhen against gods and native beings alike.

Phranque

Cosmic Companion

A curious cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid. Earnest and protective, Phranque represents the lighter emotional tone amid the Everywhen's brutal conflicts.

Rue

Sword Guardian

An enchanted ribbon guardian voiced by Perlina Lau. Rue's trust is earned through combat, and her sword becomes Faye's primary weapon throughout the journey.

Enemies & Gods

The Everywhen is populated by gods, creatures, and beings from across mythologies — many hostile to a newcomer like Faye. The State of Play reveal showcased two major deities who greet Faye with clear aggression.

Santa Monica Studio has promised a fantastic cast of gods and creatures from across mythology, plus beings native to the Everywhen itself. Expect encounters that draw from Egyptian, Mongolian, Norse, and other pantheons as the series expands beyond its Greek and Norse roots.

Sekhmet

Egyptian Goddess

A fierce deity from Egyptian mythology encountered in the Everywhen. Sekhmet is decidedly unfriendly toward Faye's sudden appearance in the realm.

Begtse

Mongolian War God

A war god from Mongolian mythology who represents the cross-cultural scope of the Everywhen's divine conflicts.

Masked Captors

Early Antagonists

Two intimidating masked figures capture Faye immediately after she awakens, setting the opening escape sequence and her first combat encounters.
